Food at Humber adds up fast if you buy it one $15 lunch at a time. The cheap route runs through a handful of outlets at each campus, a couple of promo programs the food service runs on purpose, and three free food programs most students walk past without knowing. This guide covers where to eat, what to look for, and what to grab when money is tight.
The cheapest spots on campus, at a glance
Humber’s food runs through Chartwells, with outlets split between North Campus and Lakeshore Campus. The wide selection lives in the Food Emporium at North and the Commons Eatery at Lakeshore.
| Spot | Campus | What it’s good for |
|---|---|---|
| Food Emporium (KB104) | North | Pizza Pizza, Quesada, Villa Madina, Burrito Loco, OFC |
| Commons Eatery | Lakeshore | Booster Juice, Good Vibes Grill, Chopped Cheese, self-serve Tim Hortons |
| Residence Dining Hall | North | All-you-can-eat with a dining plan |
| Tim Hortons | Both | Coffee and breakfast, cheapest items on campus |
| IGNITE Soupbar | Both | Free 1L frozen soup containers |
Where the food actually is
Are you a 1st year student?
You might be eligible for $4,000+ in grants!
First-year students often qualify for more than they expect. The survey checks your eligibility in about two minutes.
North Campus carries the most outlets: the Food Emporium in KB, Ackee Tree and Jamaican Spiked Patties in E building, Subway, Tim Hortons, Starbucks in the Learning Resource Commons, the Street Cafe, GH Cafe, the Trades Cafe in the CAR building, and the LinX Lounge and Hawk’s Nest. The Residence Dining Hall sits in the residence building.
Lakeshore Campus is smaller: the Commons Eatery, the Residence Cafe on the fourth floor of HCH, Tim Hortons in M building, On The Go Cafe, and the Arena Cafe in the Birmingham building.
The full list of outlets and hours lives on Humber’s food services page.
The budget programs worth knowing
Chartwells runs promos year round, and they’re the difference between a $14 lunch and a $7 one:
- Budget-friendly meal combos are advertised across the outlets, and meal plans give students 5 to 13% off posted cash prices, on or off campus.
- Weekly promotions have included things like two Monster energy drinks for $7 (over 30% off) and buy-two deals at 20% off, posted on dineoncampus.ca/humber.
- Value weeks have featured $6.99 meals at spots like Booster Juice and the Lakeshore Commons Cafe.
The practical move: check the promo board or the dineoncampus site before you pay full price. The combo of the week beats the regular menu most weeks.
Dining plans, if you live in residence
Residence students buy a declining-balance dining plan that works at every Humber food outlet. The 2026-27 options run from $2,850 (Hybrid) up to $4,600 (Ultimate) for the year, and the balance is spendable like cash but with the 5 to 13% discount built in. If you’re on a plan, spending it at the discounted outlets is what makes the discount real. If you’re not in residence, you can ignore all of this and just watch for the promos.
The free food programs
Humber has three free resources, and using them is normal. Nearly two-thirds of students who answered Humber’s own survey said they worry about food costs.
IGNITE Soupbar hands out completely free 1-litre frozen soup containers, grab-and-go. You’ll find it at North in the IGNITE Student Centre beside the Food Emporium, at Lakeshore on the second floor of the L Commons, and at the IGS building, while supplies last.
FLAS Grab ‘n Go Food Bank stocks free non-perishable items for students facing financial hardship. At Lakeshore it runs the first Tuesday of each month and every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Humber Student Food Security Fund sits behind both of those, funding food subsidies, food-security bursaries, and grocery gift cards. If food money is the thing standing between you and the end of term, start with the Healthy Hub page and use what’s there.
How to spend less on campus food
- Check the promos before you buy. The weekly deals page costs you thirty seconds and regularly saves 20 to 30%.
- Buy a combo, not items. The advertised meal combos are the discounted version of the same food.
- Hit the Soupbar on your way out. A free litre of soup is a dinner.
- Keep the Food Bank in mind early. The Grab ‘n Go runs weekly at Lakeshore; you don’t need to be in crisis to take a bag.
- Bring a coffee from home. At campus prices, a daily coffee is $500 to $700 a year.
The bottom line
The cheapest reliable eating at Humber is the promo board: budget combos and value weeks across the Food Emporium and Commons Eatery, with Tim Hortons as the everyday fallback. The free layer is real too. The IGNITE Soupbar, the FLAS Grab ‘n Go Food Bank, and the Student Food Security Fund exist because food costs hit most students, so use them before you skip a meal.
