Short answer: your Laurier fall tuition is due September 10 and winter fees are due January 11, and a late balance accrues 1.25% a month. Confirm your OSAP before move-in, pick up your OneCard, and file the student profile for bursaries by September 24.

Move-in for the Waterloo campus runs September 4 to 6, and your first week fills up fast. Most first-year money problems at Laurier come from missing a date, not from overspending. Here’s what to do in order.

Pay your fees before the deadline

Fall fees are due September 10. Winter fees are due January 11. Laurier charges 1.25% per month on any overdue balance, which is 15% a year, worse than most credit cards.

If OSAP is covering you, funding usually arrives about 10 business days after Laurier confirms your enrolment, which happens the week of September 3. If your money lands after the 10th, you’re fine as long as Laurier has your confirmation. If you’re paying part of tuition yourself, set up the payment at least a few business days early, because bank transfers take time to post.

Confirm OSAP before classes start

Are you a 1st year student?

You might be eligible for $4,000+ in grants!

First-year students often qualify for more than they expect. The survey checks your eligibility in about two minutes.

Laurier is an OSAP-approved school, and the Financial Aid Office confirms your enrolment so your funding releases. Three things slow students down every September:

  • Applying too late. The official deadline is 60 days before the end of your study period, but Laurier recommends applying about two months before your term starts. Processing time is what makes people late, not eligibility.
  • Missing documents. Your parent’s or partner’s signature, a SIN, or tax paperwork will hold the whole application. Check your OSAP account the week you get your offer.
  • Not reading the loan part. OSAP considers you for grants and a loan in one application. You can decline the loan after approval and keep the grants.

Residence, meal plan, and the stuff that bills you

If you’re in Waterloo residence, your meal plan is mandatory and bundles into your fees. The 5-day all-access plan runs $3,580.79 per term with $900 in flex dollars for the year, and the plans are HST exempt, which saves you real money at the register.

One more cost to expect: the health and dental plan bundled into your incidental fees, about $630 for the year if you start in fall. If you’re already covered by a parent’s plan, opt out during the change-of-coverage window in September. Students miss that window every year and pay for coverage they never use.

File the student profile before September 24

Laurier’s student profile is one application that puts you in the running for most competitive bursaries and awards. It opens July 23 and closes September 24, so it lands in your first week if you didn’t do it over the summer. Donor bursaries pay out between October and March, and there’s no second window for most of them.

Where to get help when money is short

  • Students’ Union Food Bank: up to five free food parcels per term, each about a week of food, dietary-adaptable. Request online, filled in 2 to 3 business days.
  • Emergency hot meals: the Dean of Students can load meal credits onto your OneCard for the dining hall.
  • Laurier Work-Study: on-campus jobs, applications open in early August and close in early September. If you missed the window, ask departments directly anyway; jobs reopen all term.

The bottom line

Your first week at Laurier comes down to three dates: pay by September 10, confirm OSAP before then, and file the student profile by September 24. Get those three done and the rest of first year is budgeting, not firefighting.
