Your first week at Waterloo is a blur of orientation, co-op talk, and a to-do list nobody hands you in one place. Most of it is fun. A few pieces of it are financial, and those are the ones that cost you if you miss them. This guide walks through what to expect in your first week, and the money moves to make before the deadlines sneak up.
Orientation: the actual schedule
Waterloo’s First Year Orientation runs Sunday, September 6 to Saturday, September 12, 2026, and it’s where you get your bearings, your student card, and your first taste of the campus. It’s also where you’ll hear a lot about co-op, because at Waterloo, co-op shapes both your schedule and your money.
Check in to get your wristband in the Student Life Centre (SLC) Great Hall on September 5 (10 a.m.–4 p.m.) or September 6 (10 a.m.–6 p.m.). After you check in, scan the QR code on your wristband to view your personalized schedule. Orientation costs $140.56 + HST for 2026, which covers your kit and 20+ events.

A note on times: the events above don’t have one universal time, because your schedule is personalized by faculty and colour team. Once you register, your full schedule with times shows up in your Portal calendar, and the QR code on your wristband pulls it up on your phone. The one fixed window is check-in, so plan to arrive September 5 or 6 during those hours.
Orientation is a completely dry week, no alcohol or drugs, regardless of age. International students have their own orientation starting September 3.
If you’re in a co-op program, remember the co-op fee: it’s about $836 per school term, on top of your tuition. It’s part of the cost of the program, so budget for it.
The one date that matters: Fees Arranged by August 25
Waterloo’s financial system is built around a status called Fees Arranged on Quest. It’s not about paying in full, it’s about having your registration status show that your fees are covered, either by payment or by confirmed financial aid.
For Fall 2026, the due date for your registration status to be Fees Arranged on Quest is August 25, 2026. That’s before classes start, and it’s the date that matters most.
If you’re not Fees Arranged by the due date, you get charged a Fees Arranged Extension Fee that climbs the longer you wait:

The due dates are non-negotiable and the extension fees are not waived. If you’re on OSAP, your assessment shows up as Anticipated Aid on Quest, and you complete a Promissory Note to confirm it. If your OSAP isn’t showing yet, you may need to upload proof of funding. Get this sorted before August 25.
Add, drop, and refund deadlines
Your first weeks are also your window to fix your schedule without academic or financial consequences. The Fall 2026 dates:

The practical takeaway: if you’re going to drop a course, do it before September 29 to get it off your record and keep your full refund. And if you’re not Fees Arranged by late September, a Not Fees Arranged (NFA) hold lands on your account, which can block your course registration for future terms.
The money moves to make in week one
Beyond the deadlines, a few small setup tasks in your first week save you money and stress all term:
- Get Fees Arranged on Quest. If you’re on OSAP, make sure it’s showing as Anticipated Aid and your Promissory Note is done. If you’re paying out of pocket, pay before August 25.
- Opt out of optional fees you don’t want. The deadline to opt out of optional and voluntary incidental fees is also August 25. Check what you’re being charged before it passes.
- Set up your bank and payment method. Know how your tuition will be covered, and don’t rely on a payment arriving on the due date.
- Find your classes before day one. Orientation is the time to walk your route, so you’re not late and stressed on the first morning.
The bottom line
Your first week at Waterloo is about more than finding your lecture halls. Get Fees Arranged on Quest before August 25, opt out of the fees you don’t want, and put September 29 on your calendar for any schedule changes. Those three things handle most of the money stress before it starts.
