# hi finance at University of Toronto

Student aid, awards, and budgeting help for University of Toronto students — from a team that knows the three campuses.

---

We built hi finance for students who pay their own way through school. This is what paying for a U of T degree actually looks like: what OSAP covers, which awards close before you think, and where the money goes once it lands.

## Student aid program

University of Toronto uses [OSAP](https://www.ontario.ca/page/osap-ontario-student-assistance-program).

## Key deadlines

### Apply to OSAP early (Jun 30)

If you need a fee deferral to register, apply by June 30. The official OSAP deadline for funding consideration is October 23, 2026 for fall, but applying late means your money may not land before classes start.

### Tuition fee payment or deferral deadline (Aug 11)

Pay the minimum to register or arrange a deferral by this date to keep your Fall/Winter 2026-27 courses. Deadlines vary by campus, so check your own registrar's page.

### Awards Profile submission deadline (Early Feb)

The Awards Profile is how you get considered for U of T awards based on financial need, leadership, and community involvement. It opens in the Join U of T portal after you apply, and the deadline is typically early February.

### UTAPS application deadline (Fall) (Oct 13)

## FAQs

### Does the University of Toronto use OSAP?

Yes. OSAP is Ontario's student aid program, and U of T is an OSAP-approved school. If Ontario is your province of residence, you apply through OSAP for grants and loans. Your province of residence is generally the last province you lived in for 12 consecutive months outside of full-time study.

### Can I get OSAP as an out-of-province student at U of T?

You apply to your home province's program, not Ontario's. A student from Alberta studying at U of T applies through Alberta Student Aid. The school you attend doesn't determine which program funds you, your province of residence does.

### Do I have to apply separately for U of T awards?

Some admission awards are automatic based on your admission average, but awards based on financial need, leadership, or community involvement need the Awards Profile. Automatic consideration covers far less than students assume, so fill out the profile if you're eligible.

### What happens if my student aid doesn't cover my tuition?

You're responsible for the shortfall by the payment deadline. Options include UTAPS, U of T's emergency assistance grants, a fee deferral, or a student line of credit, in roughly that order, since grant money doesn't have to be paid back.

### Do I need to file taxes as a U of T student with no income?

You should. Filing is how you claim your T2202 tuition credit and carry it forward, and it's what registers you for benefits like the GST/HST credit. Skipping it leaves money unclaimed.
