Your first week at UCalgary is a blur of orientation, new buildings, and a to-do list nobody hands you in one place. Most of it is fun. A few pieces of it are financial, and those are the ones that cost you if you miss them. This guide walks through what to expect in your first week, and the money moves to make before the deadlines sneak up.

Orientation: the actual schedule

UCalgary’s New Student Orientation is a two-day event on Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28, 2026. It’s a tradition over 20 years strong, and it’s where you’ll learn all about being a UCalgary student.

Day 1 (Aug 27):

  • Morning: Welcome and Pep Rally, then a free New Student BBQ
  • Afternoon: Breakout sessions and panels (academic success, the Students’ Union, settling into Calgary, and more)
  • Evening: Dinos soccer vs. MRU Cougars at McMahon Stadium, with a Students’ Union checkpoint at 3:30 p.m., walk over at 4 p.m., kickoff at 4:30 p.m.

Day 2 (Aug 28):

  • Morning: Faculty Sessions, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (times vary across faculties), where you meet your Deans, advisors, and supports
  • The Great Dino Challenge, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (a campus scavenger hunt)
  • $10 all-you-care-to-eat at The Landing, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Afternoon: UCalgaryStrong Carnival, 1 to 3 p.m., with games, music, and prizes

Register early, as some events have limited capacity. If you get lost, look for someone wearing a red “Ask me” button.

The tuition payment deadline: September 18

Your Fall 2026 tuition is due September 18, 2026. After the deadline, a late payment penalty is applied to your outstanding balance. There is no fees appeal for missing a fee deadline. If you sign up for a payment plan, your instalment due dates are listed in your Student Centre, and the deadline to enrol in a Fall payment plan is also September 18.

If you’re waiting on Alberta Student Aid, remember the lead time: Student Aid recommends applying at least 60 days before your study period starts, because processing time is what makes people late, not eligibility. If you haven’t applied yet, that’s the first thing to fix this week.

Add, drop, and refund deadlines

Your first weeks are also your window to fix your schedule without academic or financial consequences. The Fall 2026 dates:

DeadlineDateWhat it means
New Student OrientationAug 27–28, 2026Two-day orientation before classes
Classes beginSep 1, 2026First day of fall term
Tuition dueSep 18, 2026Pay in full or enrol in a payment plan; late penalty applies after

The practical takeaway: get your schedule settled in the first couple of weeks, and make sure your tuition is paid or your aid is confirmed by September 18.

The money moves to make in week one

Beyond the deadlines, a few small setup tasks in your first week save you money and stress all term:

  • Apply to Alberta Student Aid if you haven’t. The 60-day lead time means September-start applications should already be in.
  • Set up your bank and payment method. Know how you’ll pay tuition by September 18.
  • Get your student ID. You’ll need it for the library, buildings, and campus services.
  • Check your fees for things you can opt out of. Some incidental fees are optional, and the opt-out windows are early in the term.
  • Find your classes before day one. Orientation is the time to walk your route, so you’re not late and stressed on the first morning.

The bottom line

Your first week at UCalgary is about more than finding your lecture halls. Get to both days of orientation on August 27–28, and put September 18 on your calendar. Those two things handle most of the money stress before it starts.
